How did we manage in a world without calculators?
Easy answer: we were better at mathematics. Or, more specifically, we were better at basic computational skills—simple addition and subtraction.
The other day, I fumbled over the most basic math problem, I was tired and didn’t feel like thinking. I reached for my calculator, paused, and then continued to solve the problem in my head .
Is ChatGPT the new “calculator” for literacy? Will we no longer need to deliberate over sentences and phrases, instead outsourcing the mental task to a version of what we call technology?
Rather than text a new love with words from our heart will we ask ChatGPT? The good news is the dog will never need to eat our homework again, homework will not take us long. With ChatGTP the work will still be done, the note written, the task achieved, but with the support of a computational support device.
Many claim they’re not very good at math however many say they are ‘better at’ reading or writing. Perhaps, in the future, once we have skilfully learnt to outsource these tasks through a source such as ChatGTP we will more commonly hear also the terms, said casually in passing, “I’m not very good at writing.”
If our ability to engage with the symbols that define our intellectual world is diminished, what new forms of intellect might emerge?
Until next time,
Mon x
